About Superplasticizer Admixture

Superplasticizer admixture is a general term for additives in concrete. superplasticizer admixture also include early-strength agents, retarders, shrinkage-reducing agents.

The so-called concrete chemical admixture is a substance added in the process of mixing concrete (it can be added at the same time as the mixing water, or it can be added later than water) to improve the performance of concrete. The dosage is generally not more than 5% of the cement mass.

The earliest concrete chemical admixture used in my country is sulfite pulp waste liquid, etc., which is a by-product of the paper industry, and was called “plasticizer” at that time. The pulp waste liquid can significantly improve the workability of concrete mixtures and improve the its strength and durability.

After the 1990s, my country’s chemical admixtures have developed rapidly. So far, there are thousands of manufacturers with an annual output of 2.8 million tons, and the products have hundreds of commodity varieties.

With the development of science and technology, many new requirements have been put forward for concrete performance, such as high-fluidity concrete required for new pumping processes, high-strength and high-durability concrete for large-span buildings, and early-strength concrete for winter construction.

These requirements can be met with appropriate varieties of admixtures. Therefore, the successful development of high-quality, multi-variety concrete chemical admixtures is a major change and innovation in the history of concrete technology development. Concrete chemical admixtures are recognized by countries all over the world as one of the essential components in concrete.

The purpose of adding concrete chemical admixtures is mainly to improve the properties of concrete mixtures or hardened concrete in some aspects, it does not include grinding aids, Coagulant (such as gypsum), etc.

There are many varieties of concrete chemical admixtures. Each admixture often has one or more functions, and its chemical composition can be organic, inorganic, or a combination of both. Therefore, concrete chemical admixtures have different classification methods.

Classified by main function

  1. Chemical admixtures to improve the rheological properties of concrete mixtures. Including various water reducing agents, air entraining agents and pumping agents, etc.
  2. Chemical admixtures that adjust the setting time and hardening properties of concrete. Including retarders, early strength agents and accelerators.

  3. Chemical admixtures to improve the durability of concrete. Including air-entraining agent, antifreeze agent, waterproof agent and rust inhibitor, etc.

  4. Chemical admixtures to improve other properties of concrete. Including air-entraining agents, expanding agents, coloring agents, etc.

Concrete chemical admixtures are classified according to their main functions, which have the advantages of simplicity and applicability, and also conform to the naming principle. When a certain admixture (mainly compound admixture) has more than one main function, it is named according to its more than one function. For example, when an admixture has water-reducing and early-strength effects, it is an early-strength water-reducing agent; when a certain admixture has water-reducing and air-entraining effects, it is called an air-entraining water-reducing agent.

Classification by chemical composition

  1. Inorganic chemical admixtures. Including various inorganic salts, some simple metals and a small amount of hydroxides, such as CaCl2 and NaSO4 in early strength agents, aluminum powder in air entraining agents, aluminum hydroxide in waterproofing agents, etc.
  2. Organic chemical admixtures. This type of admixture accounts for the vast majority of concrete admixtures, and there are many types. Most of them belong to the category of surfactants, including anionic, cationic, nonionic and polymer surfactants. Such as lignosulfonate, sulfonic acid formaldehyde condensate in water reducing agent, etc. Some organic chemical admixtures do not have surface-active properties themselves, but can be used as high-quality admixtures.

  3. Compound chemical admixtures. Admixtures made of appropriate inorganic and organic compounds often have multiple functions or significantly improve a certain performance.

Concrete chemical admixtures are classified according to their components, which is conducive to the development of scientific research and the development of new varieties.
